I exhaled deeply. We walked from the church into an overcast sky, and waited as the pallbearers carried my father’s casket into the hearse at a gentle and steady pace.
A few weeks ago, my sister V and I met with a medium in the hopes in speaking with our father who passed away four years ago in January. She was carrying guilt over his passing and wanted to hear from him.
A family doesn’t just mean
Who you are related to
But those who adopted you into theirs as well.
They may not always provide us with joy and acceptance
And in times they come to offer us adversity and challenges
To build our character;
and as we let go of our self-importance,
we are better able to recognize the gifts they bring to us.
